What does an annual checkup include and why get one?
A complete annual checkup includes a visit, physical exam, EKG and general lab work (blood and urine). It helps catch problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol or thyroid issues early.
What is checked
- In-person visit and medical history.
- Complete physical exam.
- EKG.
- Lab work: complete blood count (CBC), metabolic panel (CMP), urinalysis, hemoglobin A1c, thyroid (TSH), cholesterol and liver function.
- Pap smear for women 21 to 64.
- PSA and testosterone for men 50 to 69.
Why do it every year
Many conditions, such as prediabetes or high blood pressure, have no symptoms at first. Catching them early allows treatment before they cause damage.
