What is a nurse practitioner and what can they do for you in Florida?
A nurse practitioner (NP or APRN) is an advanced practice nurse with a master's or doctoral degree. In Florida they can evaluate you, diagnose, order labs, prescribe medications and be your primary care provider.
What training they have
First they graduate as a registered nurse (RN) and work with patients. Then they complete a master's (MSN) or doctorate in nursing with a specialty, such as family practice. Finally, they pass a national certification exam and obtain a state APRN license.
What they can do for you
- Checkups and physical exams.
- Diagnose and treat common and chronic conditions.
- Order and interpret lab work and X-rays.
- Prescribe medications.
- Provide long-term follow-up.
Is it the same as a physician?
No. A physician (MD or DO) studies medicine; a nurse practitioner studies advanced nursing. The correct title is nurse practitioner or APRN. In primary care they do much of the same daily work, with a strong focus on prevention and clear explanations.
How to verify a license in Florida
Go to the Florida Department of Health provider search (MQA) and enter the provider's name. There you can see whether the license is active.
